TIPPY THE CAT

This is a children’s book with illustrations created in the 1920s, found by the artist’s grand-daughter. This is the original cover and the redesigned look. The objective was to modernize the book for today’s audience and at the same time preserve the hand done quality of the original. Partnering with the author’s grand-daughter and my 17 year-old son, a budding graphic designer, we revived Tippy for the 21st century.

The original manuscript was hand-written. My son painstakingly scanned the artwork, and then retouched all the handwriting; replacing the areas where there was text with background that matched the aged paper. We then selected a font for the text that would be friendly for young readers, especially those with dyslexia.

To preserve the artist’s original hand-made intention, the cover font was chosen for its paint brush look to recall his hand painted cover. We designed the endpapers with a blown up handwritten exerpt of the text. We selected a vivid blue for the dust jacket, which is a color the artist used in many of the story’s paintings.
